Tariff Codes

Tariff Codes are the foundation of the Tariff Module. A Tariff Code defines the Tariff Rate and Calculation method for calculating a tariff.

IMPORT FROM EXCEL – Tariff codes can be imported into Business Central from an Excel file. The required layout is shown below. The import will begin on row 2.

  • Column 1: Tariff Code up to 30 characters
  • Column 2: Description
  • Column 3: Tariff Method (0 = % Unit Cost, 1 = % Unit Price)
  • Column 4: Rate (percentage). This should be provided as 30.00 for 30.00%
  • Column 5: Specific Amount. Dollar Amount or zero.
  • Column 6: Per Weight. Usually 1 if Specific Amount is used, or zero

Example:

The Import Utility will validate each of the tariff codes and the results will be displayed in a worksheet:

Any lines with an error will not be imported. Click COMMIT VALID RECORDS to import the lines that can be imported.

After importing a list, use the REFRESH FROM USITC button to attempt to the retrieve information from //hts.usitc.gov/ for ALL listed tariff codes. This may take some time if the list is long.

To enter a new Tariff Code, click the NEW button to open the WilloWare Tariff Code card.

TARIFF CODE – The Tariff Code can be a string value, such as CN or MX for a general tariff on all goods from China or Mexico. The Tariff Code can also be an HTS Code (Harmonized Tariff Schedule Code). When an HTS Code is used, the REFRESH FROM USITC button can attempt to the retrieve information from //hts.usitc.gov/. To view the tariff on the web, click OPEN USITC WEBSITE.

DESCRIPTION – Enter a short description of the Tariff Code.

HTS DESCRIPTION – Displays the full description from the USITC website.

TARIFF METHOD – Determines how the tariff will be calculated, by either using the Item Unit Cost or Item Unit Price.

TARIFF PERCENT (%) – Specifies the tariff percentage. If the code was found on the USITC website, and a Percent General Rate of Duty was specified, it will be used.

TARIFF AMOUNT ($) – Normally this will be specific as a certain dollar amount (i.e. $0.015) per 1 kg. However, the MULTIPLIER FOR ITEM WEIGHT field can be used to express the duty in a different U of M such as pounds, such as $0.015 per 2.205. The Sales Line Duty is then: $0.015 * (Sales Line Quantity * (Item Weight in LBS / Per Weight)).

RATES OF DUTY – If the Tariff Code is a HTS code from the USITC website, the Rates of Duty will be displayed.

VIEW ITEMS – Opens the Item Tariff Codes page to assign this tariff code to specific items.
